The theme that came up time and again that resonated with me the most was “A New Direction” as a redemptive and holistic approach towards combating recidivism and focusing on the empowerment, encouragement, enrichment and dignity reflected in the values of the Developing Opportunities and Offering Reentry Solutions (DOORS) program, which provides or arranges linkages to a range of community-based rehabilitative services.
The illustrations, which are lively and playful, pertain to education, literacy, employment, community, and healthcare as well as directional signage, local architectural typologies and vegetation, music, art,and performance as relates to some of the programmatic functions of the 3rd floor. Interwoven throughout these illustrations are scale figures and characters, text, icons, symbols, and cultural motifs and patterns that speak to the countless opportunities, resources, help, advocacy, and support available to clients, visitors and the community at large. The result is bold, playful, de-stigmatizing, and encourages curiosity, inquiry and reflection from all participants and visitors to the space.
