Harlem/Haarlem is a four-part series of digital collages created for Harlemworld: Metropolis as Metaphor at The Studio Museum in Harlem in 2004. Drawing on architectural visualization, mapping, historical imagery, and speculative design, the works examine Harlem as a complex metropolitan landscape shaped by overlapping histories of migration, settlement, identity, development, and displacement.
Moving across scales and time periods, from the transatlantic slave trade and early Dutch settlement to contemporary redevelopment and gentrification, the series treats the neighborhood as an evolving urban system rather than a fixed place. Dense layers of imagery, diagrams, architectural interventions, and imagined structures document Harlem’s continuing transformation while speculating on the social and spatial forces shaping its future.
